Here’s a trick that involves a coin and a salt (or pepper) shaker. You must be sitting down at a table to do this trick. A restaurant is a great place to perform this one.

  • Tell your audience that you will make a coin disappear by rubbing it with a salt shaker.
  • Put a napkin over the salt shaker and place your hands over the napkin.
  • Put the salt shaker, covered with the napkin, on top of a nickel.
  • Move it around in circles and say something like “abracadabra, abracazoom, make the nickel leave this room!”
  • Pick up the napkin and shaker and act disappointed when you still see the nickel lying on the table.
  • Holding the napkin and salt shaker away from the table, allow the shaker to fall onto your lap. The napkin should still maintain the shape of the shaker. (Practice this!)
  • Tell the audience you’re going to try that again.
  • Keeping your hand over the napkin in its shaker mold, repeat your patter “abracadabra, abracazoom, make the nickel leave this room!”
  • Push down on the napkin to flatten it on the table. It will look like the salt shaker has gone through the table.

Your audience will be amazed!

  • The next step is to fold the bottom edge of the paper up to cover the coin. The bottom edge should not be folded up all the way up to the top edge but should be about 5 millimeters below it.
  • The right edge of the paper is then folded back behind the coin.
  • The left edge of the paper is then folded back behind the coin.
  • The last fold is made by bending the top flap of the paper behind the coin. This will appear to the audience member to have completely sealed in the coin. Unknown to them there is actually an opening at the top of the paper pouch.
  • Turn the paper pouch upside down in your hand and let the coin gently fall into your palm where you can conceal it from the audience.
  • For a finale, you can tear the paper pouch in two, where the audience see that the coin appears to have vanished. Use a little patter to make this trick more entertaining.
